Fashion Svengali Francisco Costa is creating a line of dresses for Macy’s poised to give budget-conscious clothes horses red-carpet pizzazz.
The Calvin Klein star is joining forces with the retail giant to launch a limited-edition dress line inspired by his Brazilian heritage.
“Of course, it’s a must for a red carpet. It’s really easy. It’s really relevant,” Costa told the Daily News Wednesday.
“It embodies the spirit of Calvin,” he said of the line. “So chic. It’s so cool. I’m very happy with it.”
In teaming with Macy’s, the 47-year-old Manhattan designer is following in the footsteps of fashion hotshots Karl Lagerfeld, Giambattista Valli and Matthew Williamson in creating a line for the national chain store.
He plans to unveil Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein collection at the Macy’s Herald Square flagship store May 15.
The dresses — part of a Macy’s spring campaign dubbed “a Magical Journey to Brazil” — will range in price from $135 to $180.

"Hunger Games" star Jennifer Lawrence wore a red Calvin Klein Collection dress designed by Costa at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards in 2011. |
“That’s the exciting thing about this project, being able to offer our quality and our good design at this price point, because now you make it affordable,” Costa said. “You become democratic, and that’s a good feeling.”
Costa, a protégé of fashion legend Oscar de la Renta, has become the go-to designer of Hollywood starlets like “The Hunger Games” heroine Jennifer Lawrence and “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” actress Rooney Mara.
“If you think of Jennifer (Lawrence) in that red dress when she came to the Oscars (in 2011), the collection has the same vibe,” Costa said. “Very athletic, easy, jersey and crepe.”
He said he took his ideas from the things he loves about Brazil - from the flowers and the sunsets to the architecture.
“I love architecture,” he said. “I look at Brazilian architecture and that really translates into clothes. The sense of the color palette, and the sense of having clothes that are easy and urban and contemporary and fresh.”
Martine Reardon, Macy’s chief marketing officer, said she was thrilled Costa chose the department store as a venue to present his “elegant, minimalist” designs to the masses.
